Real Patients. Real Results

What to Expect: Before, During, and After Testing

Before Testing

01
You’ll meet with your surgeon to review your personal and family history and determine if genetic testing is appropriate. If so, we’ll explain the testing process and answer all your questions.

During Testing

02
A simple saliva or blood sample is taken and sent to a certified lab. Results are typically available within 2–3 weeks. Testing can often be done the same day as your consultation.

After Testing

03

Once your results are in, we’ll meet again to interpret them together. If your test shows a genetic mutation, we’ll explain your options—from increased screening to preventive surgery—and support you every step of the way.

Insurance & Financing

Premier Surgical Network and The Institute for Advanced Reconstruction accept a wide range of insurance plans, including Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and others.

Genetic testing is often covered when medically indicated. Our team will help verify your benefits before testing. Payment plans may be available for out-of-pocket costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is BRCA testing?
BRCA1 and BRCA2 are genes that, when mutated, significantly increase the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Testing looks for these and other mutations.
Who should consider genetic testing?
Anyone with a family history of breast, ovarian, pancreatic, or prostate cancer—especially at a young age—may benefit from testing.
Is genetic testing only for women?
No. Men can carry and pass on genetic mutations and may be at risk for other cancers as well.
What if my test is negative?
A negative result is often reassuring, but doesn’t eliminate all risk. We’ll still work with you to monitor your health appropriately.
What if I test positive for a mutation?
We’ll explain your options in detail, from increased screening to preventive surgery, and connect you with the right support resources. Our genetic testing company offers a genetic counselor to help guide decision-making.
How much does testing cost?
Most insurance plans cover testing when there’s a personal or family history of cancer. We’ll verify your benefits in advance.
Is my information kept private?
Yes. Your results are protected under medical privacy laws and shared only with your permission.
Can I have testing even if I’ve already had breast cancer?
Absolutely. Many patients choose to test post-diagnosis to guide reconstruction or future risk decisions.
Can I bring a family member to the consultation?
Yes. Genetic decisions can be emotional, and we encourage you to bring support if it helps you feel more comfortable.
Do I need a referral?
In most cases, no referral is needed, but we’re happy to coordinate with your primary or referring doctor if desired.
